Workshops

In a Bootstrap workshop, you will...

  • Experience the entire curriculum
  • Explore the research
  • Learn about pedagogy, content and integration with other subjects
You'll work with your peers to discuss content, pedagogy, and spend the day in your students' shoes. You'll have a chance to try activities from every single Bootstrap class. You'll be able to debrief with other teachers, talk pedagogy with the trainers, and try out the materials and software firsthand. And finally, you'll go home with a complete final project that you created.

In this Bootstrap workshop, you'll explore the research on Algebra education along with a 100% hands-on experience working with our materials to support students in solving word problems, understanding functions, and putting order of operations to rest once and for all. This workshop is completely FREE - with a stipend! - and includes year-round continuing PD and coaching for all teachers. Click here tor reserve your seat!
  • Algebra 2 - Riverside, CA :: June 24th-28th, 2024
    It's a big question in California these days: "should a student take Data Science, or Algebra 2?" At Bootstrap, we've never really understand why these classes are in competition with one another, when each subject supports the other! We're proud to bring our Algebra 2 materials to CA for this summer, which allow Algebra 2 teachers to embed Data Science in their existing classes. And when combined with our existing Data Science materials, they create a rigorous Data Science class with a strong foundation in quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and periodic models. This workshop is completely FREE - with a stipend! - and includes year-round continuing PD and coaching for all teachers. Click here to sign up!
  • Algebra - Bay City, MI :: July 8th-12th, 2024
    Thanks to long partnership with Grand Valley State University and MiSTEM, Bootstrap returns to Michigan for another summer of three different PD opportunities for Michigan educators! For 2024, Bootstrap:Algebra, comes to Michigan for the first time, led by our master trainers. This workshop is intended for CS and Math teachers in grades 8-10. CS teachers will discover how to use computer science to reinforce mathematical understanding and support core rigorous problem-solving. Math teachers will find lessons and techniques to bring applied, relevant, project-based learning to solving word problems, inequalities, order of operations, and multiple representations of functions. Click here for more information!
  • Data Science - Bay City, MI :: July 8th-12th, 2024
    Back by popular demand, of course, is Bootstrap:Data Science. We've directly trained more than a hundred educators across the state, and now we're bringing the show back to train the next hundred! This PD is aimed at teachers of grades 8-12, with broad applications across the curriculum. The PD covers the usual compliment of programming and statistics, with special attention paid to how these topics can be integrated outside of a dedicated DS class. Teachers of math, computer science, social studies, science, and history will find projects and materials that bring their subjects to life, by teaching students how to analyze real data about everything from Biology to History, Sports to Climate, and from roller coasters to Pokemon. Click here for more information!
  • Data Science - Santa Clara, CA :: July 8th-12th, 2024
    Bootstrap:Data Science comes to Santa Clara! Find out how real data and an easy-to-use programming environment can be used to bring topics in math, science, social studies and civics to life through inquiry-based instruction! This workshop is completely FREE - with a stipend! - and includes year-round continuing PD and coaching for all teachers. Click here to reserve your seat!
  • Data Science - Virtual :: July 15th-19th, 2024

Reviews

"It's a completely contained, self-differentiating, modular set of lessons that you can use to fit your needs. There's a low floor, no ceiling, and the potential for higher-order thinking is very high."

"I was lucky enough to attend the workshop in Chicago. What a WONDERFUL USEFUL PD day -- the first one in a long while to get me excited about teaching Algebra for the 20th year. If you do come back -- I would love to know about it."
-- Aimee Smith, Chicago Public Schools

"Bootstrap is groundbreaking in terms of meaningfully integrating CS into core subjects (in this case algebra) and packaging it in a way that is immediately accessible and understandable to students and teachers. I feel like this program is a benchmark to strive for when it comes to finding ways to integrate programming principles in schools, and was delighted by the emphasis on the importance of integrating math/programming as a means of equity. Teachers with whom I work routinely ask for programming resources that are tied to core subjects and Bootstrap is nailing that connection."

"I loved the HANDS-On approach! Getting the computer into my hands and actually doing the programming was so important to me."

"Thank you for the wonderful learning experience surrounding the Bootstrap Program. It was a fantastic demonstration of how our teachers can teach algebraic concepts within a real-world application that is personally significant to many of our students. There were so many wonderful things that teachers had to say about their experience."
-- Julie Staton, Lake County Public Schools

"Amazing! Best math workshop I've ever attended! I can't wait to use this with our students."
-- Dana Kirby, Anne Arundel Public Schools

"I wanted to tell you what a great PD you presented. It was probably the very best I've been a part of (and I've been to lots!). I can very clearly see how I could implement this with my students. I can't wait to see if I can get them engaged a little more than usual and have them making connections a little more deeply than usual."
-- Carol Mann, Ceiba College Prep Middle School
